For my master thesis, I am working on Mobile Laser Scanner data which my duty is Extraction of Powerlines Poles. My data is about 10 Kilometers long and has approximately 60 the powerline poles. Fortunately, my algorithm has extracted 58 the poles correctly and two others poles were not completely extracted by Mobile Laser Scanner system which caused proposed algorithm can not extract them. The proposed algorithm is completely automatic and does not need many parameters for extraction.
My main question is that which circumstances do need my implementation to be published in a good ISI journal?

I am trying to measure the toughness of leaves. I have rigged up a system where I put a leaf on a cube of agar (15g agar per liter water) and drop an empty syringe with a piece of wire (not a needle) through a tube to puncture the leaf. Unfortunately, the weight of the empty syringe is sufficient to penetrate the leaf so I figured a tougher leaf would cause the wire to enter the agar less, thus making a shallower hole. Is there an equation to relate the force required to puncture the leaf to the amount of slowing the leaf exerts on the wire? I also don't know if the difference will be perceptible and perhaps I should find a lighter puncture object

I am looking for literature to aid me with the explanation and discussion of experimental results (saturated pool boiling of water at atmospheric pressure on copper surfaces) where a shift of the boiling curve towards lower superheats and a decrease of CHF were recorded; this trend was noted after the first onset of CHF. I am interested in literature that deals with the change of both the boiling process and surface characteristics (wettability, topography, chemistry etc.) after the first onset of CHF. Also, any literature about the (possible) shift of the boiling curve in repeated experiments on the same surface (as a consequence of CHF onset and transition to film boiling, where possible low-temperature annealing occurs) would be most welcome. So far, a search lasting several hours yielded no results.

This sentence is true? When operating at stoichiometric conditions, possibility of knocking is lower, so it is not necessary to use the highest fuel octane number.
I think If an engine runs at richer or leaner conditions, higher octane number is required due to lower flame speed.?

Fuel Octane number for gasoline fuel or SI engine's application. The Octane number refer to Ignition quality of the fuel. Normally Octane number varies from 90 to 120 sometimes minimum 95. For Stoichiometric application Octane number 95 would be enough. Two high Octane number could affect on NOx emissions.

I want to evaluate a multiphysics fluid pump problem. This is a conceptual fuel pump for automotive application. The current model has magnetic elements (in pump itself), reciprocating components and an integrated BLDC motor. Architecture of this pump is considerably different from existing reciprocating and rotary pumps. I hope to find some vital information like delivery pressure and flow rate fluctuation, net heat generation, flow pattern inside the pump, dynamics of the moving components etc.

2. Do I need a team and different softwares to solve different problems or it is possible to evaluate them by one person?

ANSYS has a good Multiphysics capabilities. I did a structural-thermal-electrical analysis in conjunction with CDF analysis. However I don't know much about electro magnetic simulation. A few Multiphysics elements are available in WB that you can have degrees of freedom in different physics. In addition to that, there is methode called "Load Transfer" that you can you use. Basically you Perform a simulation in a physic and then transfer the result to another physic. You need to identify which method is the best in your application based on a lot of parameters such as complexity, computational resources, time and etc. Hope this information helps.

Sometimes deleting Temp folder affect the performance of other software installed on the computer or reset them to the original state. I suggest to delete only ANSYS files temporary folder that sits at this location.
C:\Users\"Your User Name""\AppData\Roaming\Ansys
Deleting this folder reset ansys to a fresh installed state. Hope that helps.

Each semester we collaborate with real clients (Municipalities, companies, etc.) who provide a real complex problem to solve. Students must develop an innovative solution and to present it in various phases to clients and lecturers. All the theoretical knowledge provided is used within the project. The design approach is based on research principles. We have a very positive experience so far. Students are very involved and they seem developing a deeper understanding of the topics when they apply them to real case studies. We measured also a substantial increase in their satisfaction towards our study programme. Without any doubt, the PBL curriculum is working for us.

Since control system is prevalent in everywhere naturally, best approach is to show the real life examples to students and make them understand how control system is the key for stability of the universe, For example, we making sure of the right temperature of water before shower, etc.
When we talk about control system, stability is key concept. So, once the appreciation of real life day to day activitiy is made, then slowly the context can then be moved into more technical examples. Then maths can be introduced to explain various concepts and how stability is ensured for various control theory, such as while designing a controller.
When I studied control systems for the first time, i got overwhelmed with theories. It was only after many many years, everything just started to make so much sense and thus found control systems a fascinating topic.

The answer of Games is satisfactory but i would like to say that Arduino is a microcontroller development board that has interfaces and data converters. It cab be also connected a labtop and PCs. There a wealth of microcontrollers from many vendors including Atmel of Arduino. A microcontrollers is a microcomputer on a chip while a CPU is a central processing unit that needs a memory and input output units to work as a computing platform. Microcontollers are thought for control tasks. You have only to use the proper microcontrollers. If the microcontroller can not perform the tasks you can use one board computers such as Rasperry Pi.

Regardless of choosing laptops or PC, if you load the CPU 100% for two days, it will definitely affect the performance later on. You can check the maximum temperature of your CPU while it is running at 100% and follow the manufacture guideline.

I was able to see the option to request inter-library loan when I logged in my QUT library account. I had to check a box to "extend the research beyond QUT library" to be able to see the options though.

In "steady state" the facilitator keeps staying in the Q, asking questions and by doing so facilitating the audience to reflect, solve issues and provide answers with no external intervention.   1. Durability is the property to withstand a stress (load) for a long time. This term is very vague, because under load can be understood different things (cyclic mechanical stress, wear, damage, pressure and others).
  2. Toughness is the ability to absorb and plastically deform without fracturing. That nothing to do with other three terms. For example, brittle materials, such as ceramics, have high hardness and strength but low toughness.
  3. Hardness is a measure of the resistance to localized plastic deformation induced by either mechanical indentation or abrasion. For metals, hardness and strength are often related to one another (the higher the hardness, the greater the strength), but in general they are independent properties of the material. For example, glass has a high hardness, but very low strength and toughness.
  4. The concept of strenght means for the engineer only one thing: what mechanical load the material withstands before destruction. In physics, this concept has a broader meaning.

I tend to agree with Dr. Garry. During manufacture every 10th product should be tested by a competent technician, inflating the balloons to the recommended volume and seeing that they hold the air for a few hours.
Prior to actual use in surgery, the surgeon should make sure that he/she repeats the testing. Only this time it will only be for a few minutes. And it always pays to have a back-up Pruitt-Inahara shunt in the room.

The answer above is incorrect....firstly the overall flow through a carotid shunt is quite small,and secondly,it is only performing the job of the native artery,bypassing it whilst the carotid is clamped and operated upon.
The real issues with carotid shunts are as follows:
1.Decision making process in inserting a shunt may take time,and in some cases may be incorrect,thus relying on good perioperative techniques for measuring or quantifying adequate cerebral blood flow such as TCD and INVOS.
2.Inserting the shunt into the carotid artery can result in dislodging plaque material distally during insertion,or occasionally dissection.
3.The shunt can be placed too far down into the common carotid,and may enter the subclavian origin and occlude flow to the arm,or lose flow through the shunt.
4.The shunt can be dislodged or blown out of the artery,neccesitating reclamping and replacement,with all of the above risk factors.
5.The shunt can interfere with visualising the operation site and may impede surgery to a small degree.
In short,if there is a lack of adequate monitoring of cerebral perfusion,a shunt can be thought of as mandatory by many,but if there is reliable and validated cerebral monitoring(such as INVOS or TCD),then shunting should only be performed where indicated.

The most effective way to address a fear or phobia, if you can find a practitioner, is through Brainspotting (see articles on the Internet). Brainspotting practitioners are available globally. The process helps to address "stuck" emotional content in the limbic system that is causing excessive fear triggering. A corollary treatment the individual can do wtihout a therapist is tapping - there are books on it available online. The individaul should exercise self-compassion - the brain is an amazing thing and it is designed to recognize threats and protect from them; once a threat is programmed, the individual does not have conscious control over the triggering. Another longer-term treatment to do alone is Heartmath - there is a biofeedback gadget called an Emwave available on Heartmath.com and the research is all on Heartmath.org. The Emwave trains the individaul to regulate fear and other triggers arising in the limbic system and to deal with them before over-reacting. Fear and phobias are often the result of unprocessed emotional inputs - if it is a single event trauma, Brainspotting can sometimes resolve the issue in 1-4 sessions. REpeated-event traumas take longer. REgular tapping when upset also helps the individuial esolve the stuck emotions in the limbic system. I hope this helps.r

I think being destructive is not just a personality but project, team composition, leader personality, collaboration form, relationship, etc. related.
There is no general solution to handle destructive team members, so the classification of the destructive team members or behavior won't help too much (it is interesting).
The team leader or the members can identify the destructive behavior first - a behavior makes to achieve the team's goals more difficult or impossible. The first step can be an open discussion in the team about that including the destructive member.
Other way around to understand the motivations of the destructive team member and handle the person based on that knowledge, there can be a way the common interests help to get through on the issues.
Close the collaboration with the damaging one can be a solution, I know it is not always feasible.

In my opinion, the whole process "of conducting research, publishing it, and citing" is moving towards being more politicized. They may call it globalization but, apparently, this is a sort of colonization in which research endeavor in certain areas cannot progress unless it follows the lead of specific groups in other "far" countries. This way, the "masters" can be sure that they stay at the top while the others lag behind.

However, since those observation are "local", I have the strong feeling this strategy might fail to detect severe spatial inaccuracies (i.e, checking the accuracy of detected contours of different land cover patches obtained as a result of supervised classification).
As such, I was wondering how transect lines can help here. Since they provide a continuous information along a line over the mapped area, I was wondering how thematic accuracy can be assessed this way ? I came accross an interesting read (Skidmore, A. K., & Turner, B. J. (1992). Map accuracy assessment using line intersect sampling. Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing, 58, 1453-1453), however I missed some important details and could not be able to apply the method described in the paper correctly.

There are some questions posed by your affirmation (discrete and random).
1 - In a first approach and looking only at the the expression L-1((1/(s+a)^2)*F(s))
what I would do was a) See which is the Region of convergence of F(s). I assume it is, at least, Re(s) > 0. Fix the integration path at some Re(s) = c.
b) Perform a bilinear transformation s --> z that transforms the straight line Re(s) = c into the circle centred at z=0 and with radius 1. Put z=e^{i(2pi/N)k} with k=0, 1, 2, ... N-1. Its is convenient to use a high N= 2^K, K positive integer. c) use the inverse FFT.
Yo can find these things in any book on Signals and Systems.
2 - You say that the function is discrete. In this case, it would be better to use a discrete-time formulation using a difference equation and the Z transform.

I'm an electrical engineer and I'm not so familiar with data mining concepts (I studied clustering concepts though). I have a data set that includes the measured electricity consumption of households over a year (So, the time series is too long).
I want to calculate the entropy for each household separately based on its time series to see which ones show more regular patterns.
Could you please introduce me some proper entropy measures for this?
(Note: the time series is long hence, I need a suitable measure for that)

Thanks a lot for your response. I had read your other papers previously and also these two papers that include entropy measures in their studies. I have cited them in my paper which has been submitted recently for IEEE Trans. on Smart Grids.

However, in all of these papers, the entropy, for example, Shannon entropy is calculated using the processed data. For instance, in your paper you calculated the Shannon entropy of the state transition matrix which is resulted from HMM or in [3] they compare the customer' consumption with a load shape encoding dictionary and then calculate the entropy.
My main question, however, is how to apply entropy measures on the raw data for example a time series? I wonder that is this helpful at all and can give meaningful results?

No scientific source can be considered as " Reliable" and our own judgement is the only source in the research field. I have found that one paper from the same researcher may be reliable and the another paper found in the same journal by the same author is not reliable.
We can rely on our own judgement again based on conducting similar experiments in our lab if possible or collaborating such similar results from many different researchers. As suggested by Dr Heinrich and Dr Sion partially the author's background and consistent quality of publications may speak about their research to decide their reliability. This itself will become a research project I believe.

Nonlinear systems are complicated because of the high dependency of the system variables on each others. I have to tell you that Most of the Engineers are using linear systems in their analysis. Before start solving any Engineering problem we try do linearization to get a linearized model. That is because, the nonlinear problems are difficult to solve and are so expensive. However, linear problems give very close solution to the nonlinear ones with less cost, time and effort.
I can list you many different examples of solving nonlinear problems with a linearzied model if you want. But I think it might be enough to mention simply why we are perform linearzation to solve nonlinear problems.

Can I somehow take one of these halves and convert them Mendeley↔Endnote?
Please please don't tell me I need to do it all manually
There are instructions here on how I can import my library from mendeley into endnote. I can do that, but will this work to switch an entire document from mendeley into endnote?

I am trying to work on the following problem and I am willing to transfer universities to find a good advisor:
We do not need to take the whole of the real numbers to do engineering. Since engineers only care about the first n decimal places and treat everything after that as noise, if every term in an equation has units of meters, replace them with units of centimeters, millimeters, decimeters, etc, effectively multiply everything by 10^n for what ever n value is important. Then go and use the ring of integers).
(update)I took some liberties when posting the problem that I did not think would be relevant but have clearly shown to be vital based on the comments I have received. Because engineers have the option to work in which ever set of units are desired ie, centimetres, milimeters, nanometres, etc, seconds, miliseconds, nanoseconds, etc. any problem that is not dimensionless to start with can be written as a problem in the integers with some rounding. As far as engineers are concerned, anything over n decimal places is literately noise from their equipment and not meaningful information. It does not matters that noise1+noise2+noise3+...etc > threshold for not noise. Engineers live with this all the time, of course it would be nice to be able to find out the approximate size of the error term. Does this make the initial equation not in a ring? Yes, but the equation that the engineers consider to be a good enough approximation will be in the ring of integers. Just like when we approximate functions with taylor series there will be error associated with this method. Have I figured out the exact extend to the error yet, no. As important as this is that is something that I need to work on. Yes, the value of n for an engineer will change if they multiply 2 numbers together with differing values n1 and n2 needed to make all significant figures into integers, but if the dimensions of the numbers provide a useful tool to avoid this pitfall. If I multiply x in meters by y in seconds before switch everything from meters to nanometres and seconds to nanoseconds, then the conversion from meters to nanometers is multiplication by 10^9, and the conversion from seconds to nanoseconds is again multiplication by 10^9. So the product x*y would have to be multiplied by 10^18 in the conversion. Similarly if I wanted to convert the volume to cubic nanometers from cubic meters I would have to multiply by 10^27.
