Hi everyone,
I'm trying to setting up a soil property in ANSYS 19.2 student version. I want it to be a Mohr-Coulomb model. But I also want to add a kinematic hardening law to it so that it can caputure the volume change better under cyclic loading.
However, as far as I know, the 'Bilinear Kinematic Hardening' and 'Multilinear Kinematic Hardening' options in 'Engineering Data' are for the metal properties and don't allow any parameter input for the soil kinematic hardening law.
Can anyone help me out?

Hi, in part of the engineering data, biomechanical part, you can find soil material plasticity behavior, and also you can define additional information from the left column of material characteristic behavior to define your material. additionally, this library has a lot of predefined material properties, of which you can use.

I think...it all about the countries....which really pay attention on the design or not...I mean limitations generate the ideas some time...RAS is not that popular in India but it popular in other countries.... similarly bund breeding is quite famous in India but less in other countries...if we will think about cage western world is leading but still in so many countries...it's not up to the mark...so i think all the aquaculture enngg design need to work out efficiently....
Further I would like to suggest about the vertical farming model...which may be very useful in the coming future..

The ECU( Engine Control Unit (ECU) uses the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors to determine where the pistons and valves in the engine are at any given time. The ECU uses all of this information to start and keep the engine running.
ROM displaying method of automatically identifying sensor locations in an ECU’s can be effective. This can be able to create a data representation of the functions within a binary and their internal control flow graphs. Adding ECU can be effective for engine family. Addition can be able to successfully locate 95% of all candidate functions and was able to successfully recover 100% of likely sensor addresses within each of those functions.

Dear all. The Normal distribution (or Gaussian) is mostly used in statistics, natural science and engineering. Their importance is linked with the Central Limit Theorem. Is there any ideas how to predict the numbers and parameters of thos Gaussians ? Or any efficient deterministic tool to decompose Gaussian to a finite sum of Gaussian basic functions with parameter estimations ? Thank you in advance.

For Central Limit Theorem, the random variables are not necessarily gaussian but they have to be independent and identically distributed (in classical CLT). They can come from any distribution. Moreover, CLT is an approximation. Do you have a prior knowledge that the resultant gaussian variable is composed using gaussian variables? In that case, using the convolutional properties of normal random variables can give you an idea.

Dear Respected Members,
I did many tests to construct antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering, which seems so hard to achieve. I build supercell of 2x2x1 containing 32 atoms of Mg16O16, and then replace two of Mg atoms by Cu atoms to get 12% Cu doped MgO (Mg14Cu2O16). My goal is to get the energy deference between the two configurations ΔE=EAFM−EFM from CASTEP code. Please check out the attached figures that I did and links to interpret the results using CASTEP code in materials studio. Please I need your experience and your valuable comments that will really put me on the right track. thanks.

By trying to answer your question I found the following reference with many examples on how the zeta functions (the reference doesn´t call it Riemann z functions) are all related in a natural way to eigenvalues of specific boundary value problems.
In statistical physics Z Riemann function is found in:
  1. Deriving the Stefan–Boltzmann law from Planck's law is a very simple application in Black body radiation. (see the reference below, the same chapter, pp 186)
  2. Sommerfeld expansion to calculate the thermodynamical properties of normal metals. The entropy, energy & specific heat for a degenerate electron gas. Please, for details of the calculation check: L. Landau and E. Lifshitz, Vol. 6, Statistical Physics, Pergamon 1980, Part I, chapter VI---Solids, #67 pp. 168-171.
  3. Bose-Einstein condesante calculations (transition temperature and so on) pp. 180-181 of the same reference. All thermodymical properties of bose gases.

It seems somewhat comical to me that alleged "supply chain professionals" allowed, encouraged, and built brittle non-redundant hyper-China-dependant supply chains, and now are fretting about disruptions which are inherent/inevitable in single-source scenarios.
The whole cronyCorpiratist mercenary dominator trickle-up capitalist kleptocracy is inherently unsustainable. It's had a pretty long run, and has managed to externalize most of its risk, cost, harm to far away places where people who don't matter live. The BAU racket deliberately conspires and schemes to defraud and predate on the societies in which they operate. Take hi-tech - Apple, Google, etc.
They rely on the educated healthy brain trust delivered by the social-democratic infrastructure built up over centuries of imperial/colonial extraction/exploitation/emission. They rely on relatively wealthy people buying their gizmos/services. The bean counters draw up the scenarios in which ditching domestic workers and outsourcing to slave-labour sweatshops overseas, and engaging in corpirate shall-gamery to minimize, avoid, evade taxation and thereby evade paying their share of what it costs to run the infrastructure they depend on.
OK, sure, outsource some production to China while keeping some domestic, and maybe outsourcing to some other country. THAT would be the foundation of a robust supply chain strategy. That is well known, but willfully overridden purely for short-term shareholder return maximization.
One might view COVID-19 as a Gaian self-defence mechanism.
The parasites are threatening the host, grinding up natural and human resources into digits in accounts and affluent and emissions. The degradation of natural life-support systems by our hyper-consumptive habits has blown past all the LimitsToGrowth, and past all the #BRIDGEOUT signs.

The AMR is not mentioned in Scopus and Web of Science databases from 2014, The KEM is in Scopus database and has IF 0,33 (2018) but is excluded from Web of Science database from 2014.
Accordingly, it depends on what you want: just print a paper somewhere or to have printed paper, which will read and cite others. If first variant, the mentioned journals are enough good but if second - no. You should decide yourself.

I think the utilization of nuclear science in peaceful applications is indispensable. Therefore building experts in this branch of science and technology is necessary for any society. The weapon applications must be forbidden and prevented from spreading.
As for the nuclear power reactors for electricity generation i believe that now there will be a very competing technology. It is the photo voltaic electricity generators
They become economically feasible and they will be even less expensive in the very near future. One now builds Gigawatt PV staions. PV is very safe and environment friendly compared to to both classical fuel and nuclear.
I think we as African countries must choose wisely for our development and we must go same way of the developed countries.

About two years ago, I have submitted a manuscript to a reputed journal. After a couple of months of the peer review process, the response was “major revision has been requested”. I made the necessary adjustments and resubmitted it again. The Journal's editor responded that my manuscript requires minor revision. Well, the decision was <<"Revise for Editor Only'' he claimed that revision should be quick and it will not undergo the entire review process>>. Again, I made the required edits in order to make the manuscript acceptable for publication. Afterward, I resubmitted it. It is the day 120 and the status is "With Editor". In fact, I did send two emails to the editorial team to update the status. Their response to both emails was the same, saying that they contacted the editor to accelerate the process.
Dear readers, I need to have a piece of advice: what to do as a next step?

My wild guess:
1. Editor is either on long leave or has resigned.
2. The paper has been referred again to original reviewers for their comments and they have slept over it.
3. The revised manuscript is lost in transit.
4. In the unfortunate case of death of either the Editor or Reviewer, the manuscript is being left unattended. It happened with one of my colleagues. He received a paper for review and took it to home for reading. Unfortunately he died the next day. His wife was a Scientist and she recognised the importance of the Reviewer work. She returned the manuscript to the Editor.

As a practicing lisenced structural engineer for the last 30+ years, in a family of structural engineers for the last 111 years, I have never thought of acolades of any kind. Certainly not a NOBEL. As engineers, I believe our reward is to be recognised by our peers for the quality of our work, and unnoticed by the public we serve & protect by creating the products and processes used every day without thought because of the safety, durability, and longevity of the these things that make the world a better place to live. Be proud of what you have done, and excited about what you may do in the future.

If we integrate STEM in learning, do all aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics have to be present in every activity? Or may only 2 or 3 aspects appear?

The biggest problem with this thinking is that all of those terms are far too broad to design detailed and specific learning outcomes. You might argue that all of those disciplines will influence how we shape the requirements of the teaching method, but ultimately applied are often driven 'bottom up'. Such that we start at the problem and design a teaching framework around the measures we can place on how well the problem is solved.
For example: If I am attempting to teach somebody a practical skill such as welding, my metrics are going to be a lot more specific and goal-driven (I.E. has it penetrated correctly, is the surface reasonably 'clean') than trying to start at the abstract end of STEM and work out what mathematics / technology I want to teach in the process. Eventually, under a QA / teaching review I might decide that the welder should undertake some kind of arithmetic assessment to hit the "M" part, or perhaps understand some of the metallurgical process for the "T" component etc... but that is more than likely secondary to ensuring that they are welding correctly and at a sufficient rate / quality point.
For modern education activities that are perhaps a bit more abstract (such as classroom staples of mathematics and essential sciences) then you could certainly use all four components to enrich the lesson. For example: take a lesson on organic chemistry (such as Alkene reactions) which covers "S" - we could add information about catalysts for "T", applications of chemicals or reaction rates / equilibria for "E" and some basic equation balancing or empirical calculus (such as exponential cooling or thermal model) for "M". Personally, I think you should strive to attain something from all 4, but that is only a very basic high level assessment of general education. There are so many skill areas that you'll be unaware of until you spend time working with / or become an expert(s) in the given problem space.

It all looks pretty professional. Location, programs (some supportedby the European Commission), numerous researchers (mostly professors) willing to link their name to this institute: it all looks legit.
‘Good old’ Wikipedia however mentions some issues in the past however:

To what degree this is because of incidents in the past is unclear. However it becomes more and more clear that this list is far from flawless, so a close look to make your own judgement is still required before one make a final conclusion.
Looking at their journals:
Good signs are:
-Seven journals. So unlike ‘typical’ predatory publishers not a fleet of hundreds of journals.
-Clear and transparent info (costs, etc.) for all of their journals.
-Claim to be indexed in Google Scholar seems to be legit. So at least your publication in one of their journals is searchable and can be found in Google Scholar.
-A substantial portion of their journals are indexed in Scopus. Those that are not are relatively young.
I checked the following journals and their claim to be indexed in Scopus is true:
International Journal of Design & Nature and Ecodynamics is Scopus indexed since 2008.
International Journal of Safety and Security Engineering is Scopus indexed since 2011.
International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning is Scopus indexed since 2006.
International Journal of Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements is about to be indexed in Scopus as well.

To become a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Florida, USA, the licensing requirements recently changed, in the last quarter of 2019, respectively. It is now possible to sit for both the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination and the Principles & Practice of Engineering (PE) without any Practical Experience as an Engineering Intern. All that is required is that you Pass the two (2) aforementioned Examinations at any time (no experience required to sit for the Examinations). There is a methodology, known as evidence-based practice, which uses a lot of data and calculations to establish a fact. There is little room to inject opinion. By the way, this known as “expert opinion”
Archaeology, engineering, law, and medicine are all fact-based profession. Thus, they can benefit from each other practice.

As a useful suggestion to address and deal with the above challenges in system design, you could have a comprehensive study in both Axiomatic Design (AD) theory (especially, the information axiom of this theory to compute information content of a design to satisfy the system requirements) and “Design Structure Matrix (DSM) (especially, for the aim of studying the role of dependencies and/or interaction between any interest pair of system elements).

A correct interpretation of reliability analysis is determinative for researchers and industrial developers to refine their design and also prepare proper maintenance scheduling and safety analysis. However, I still see that many designers prefer to use classical safety factors instead of reliability analysis techniques. what's your sense about this.
For example, imagine that you are going to buy a bearing and I say you this bearing's reliability is 94% for the expected life of 5 years. it means that if you test 100 bearings under normal performance, almost 6 of them should fail after 5 years. does this analysis makes sense for you in your research and development?
and if the answer is yes, how do you use the outcome of reliability analysis in your research area. the answer is important for me because I am going to start developing commercial software for reliability analysis and it is important to see what are the expectations of experts from the reliability analysis methods.

India has come a long way in renewable energy in the past decade. The Government of India aims to reach renewable energy capacity of 175 GW by 2022 in which 100 GW is planned through solar energy. Despite 12 times of capacity growth to 31 GW in solar energy, it still contributes only 3% of total electricity. It would be possible that India may not achieve its target by 2022.

In my opinion, the major technical challenge that solar power (same for wind power) in finding an efficient technology for energy storage which can make electricity prices from solar competitive with electricity prices from conventional fossil-based power generation.
In addition, there are other secondary factors that come after the development of an efficient energy storage technology. These are:
1) Availability of cost of raw material used for manufacturing the solar panels (e.g., wafers).
2) Reliability improvement of power electronics associated with solar systems.
3) Building new micro-grids infrastructures to support the solar farms.

In traditional EHL, solids are made from hard materials. The contact surface is therefore relatively low, the contact pressure is high (1 GPa or more) and the film thickness is very thin (100-200 nm).

It is very important to know the value of rolling resistances, one must use the logical values for simulation purposes. If we consider the testing of the vehicle on test track and to log or calculate the value or FC or EC, the role or RR is very critical, wrong value may under estimate or over estimate the final out come. So if one must use the logical RR value, what is the procedure that the organisation or any test engineer must follow ?
Example, I say that the RR is 7.5 kg/Ton for a particular homologation test, I use this value as reference. So is this value directly taken from tire manufacturer or have to be estimated ? As this is usually a floating value which depends on various factors of tire properties. So for a particular test, I was very interested to know the Science behind choosing a particular value.

The (re)use of mining waste seem to be an important issue worldwide.
But it has a very local meaning.
From my point of view (civil engineer, academician working as consultant for industry) it is mainly the opportunity to use large amounts of crushed rock (spoil material from the mines) for large infrastructural projects: roads, railways, flood protection systems - dams). We may enumerate following issues:
1. Suitability of the rock (minerals) in therms of its strength and "cleanness".
2. Availability in the right place and at the optimal moment of time.
3. Cost of transport and storing.
4. Environmental cost of preparing for implementation (crushing, sorting, forming of the fill).
The problem is: "How desperate is the mining company to get rid of the spoil material" and "How much the client (usually public) is flexible concerning the use of waste material for construction.
I do not know much about the first dilemma, however all the environmental precautions seem to be crucial for continuing of mining production at least in EU countries (like Poland). The second problem I observed on many building sites where even concrete debris was not accepted for granular fills due to its irregularity. I guess in every country you may find other limitations.

Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) does not require specific type of data with compared to traditional analysis.
· SEM allows for the assessment of the relationships specified in the hypotheses and the SEM is used to validate the theoretically driven model and it is ideal when testing theories that include latent variables.
· The SEM consists of the measurement model and the structural model. Specifically, the path coefficients are examined with attention to the strength, direction, and significance of the relationships.
· CFA should meet three assumptions: 1) latent and observable variables are measured as deviations from their means; 2) the figure of observable variables in the indicators was bigger than the number of unobservable variables; and 3) and the common and also unique factors were not correlated.
· When you have sample, the sample size justification could be based on several perspectives to calculate the ideal sample size for an SEM model.
· For instance Rule of Thumb which requires the multiplication of the number of unknown parameters by 5-20, or Less Optimal and Minimum Sample Size Approach assumes that the sample size for SEM should be in the range of 100-200, as 100 is the less optimal sample size, while some other propose 200 is satisfactory number for the minimum sample size for the SEM. This number might be increased according to complexity of the model.

I'm not sure if its a keywords problem or google is banning such information
For instance its so easy to find manuals for instruments but not the experiments done in scholar papers with the specific masses and volumes
Some papers have attached extra details about the experiment the majority don't and its always ambiguous to find technical procedures

@nolberto, engineering is not an exact science. Only exact science is exact and even so... Mathematics is exact until the whole corpus of mathematics hits a contradiction, and this might make it collapse (see logic, Goedel and similar). Newtonian mechanics is an approximation, which might need more complete frameworks like quantum mechanics or relativity (restrained or generalised) depending on problems to address, and which precision is required.
This leads me to the uncertainty principle of Heisenberg, hence in that context the mere notion of an exact science disappears.
Engineers never build perfect bridges, perfect space shuttles. They make assumptions, approximations, and issues appear when the system leaves the assumed operation domain...
In that sense, engineers and economists share imperfect actions with imperfect knowledge.
What makes economists look worse is that they operate without the safety net which engineers have: engineers rely on stable models for physics, chemistry, biology. What can economists rely on? Human behavior models (increasingly important, see behavioral economics since Kahneman & Tversky, with recent Nobel Prize granted to Richard Thaler, from this field)?
Assumptions on system dynamics, as demand/supply, employment/unemployment and consumption, etc?
Statistical data and models?
Economics starts with observations of agents behaving in markets and societies. Then economic policies make the bold step to try and orient trends, like employment, consumption, commerce, etc, by regulating a variable to act on other parameters. This is where risks of failure appear.
In the explanatory/modeling role, a fair amount of knowledge can be structured for past events. When acting on the future, that's not always working.
For engineers, systems and their range of operation are better defined, one could say "smaller", and therefore the future is easier to influence and sometimes control (if I turn the wheel to go right, the car is very likely to go right... In economics there is no wheel or brake as such...).
